About the Artist Megan McKiernan is a self-taught traditional watercolour Artist, Writer, and business owner. She was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and is a Metis Native American. She shares her art studio with her three cats and husband in Ontario, Canada. "I have everything I need." Every evening, I dedicate time in my home art studio creating artworks that feature a cat named Tippy on Journeys, along with art about a black cat named Malachi, who conceals his favourite toy duck in each piece. I also work on commissions, experiment with different artistic mediums and styles, and compose poetry to accompany my art. I enjoy using Daniel Smith watercolours and have recently upgraded to 300lb watercolour paper. I seem to have developed a serious relationship with Script Princeton brushes and a scraggly little brush that leaves a wonderful texture. I will grab my inspiration from the beautiful nature and hidden wonders of the world, and the love I share with my cats. I like writing poetry for each piece, followed by sketching concept art in my sketchbook, which I affectionately call my "messy" art. After refining these sketches and adding jot notes, I create a final sketch on watercolour paper. I use a sticky eraser to gently smudge some of the pencil lines, appreciating their raw appeal and leaving a gentle ghost of them. Finally, I select my watercolour palette and create a swatch if necessary. When I start to watercolour the art, I leave this world and sort of weave my way through the brush and dance with the watercolour. I have now entered into my art, and the adventure just keeps unfolding. The completion of most art pieces typically requires 3 to 4 days, depending on their size. Once the artwork is finished, I have it scanned and then secure it in a portfolio for protection. I'll have jazz, indie, rap, zen or classical music playing in the background to suit the mood of my drawings. I vlog nearly all of my art projects, preparing for a future YouTube channel and creating a record of my artistic growth. This year, I've participated in several events, such as Comicons and pop-ups, where I sell art prints of my original creations. I was one of the 3 selected artists in Oxford County to have my art displayed permanently within the middle of the Tillsonburg mall. I'm a highlighted artist on Artrepreneur, and I was accepted to exhibit my art for the Oxford Studio Tour 2025 at the Station Arts Center. I'm thrilled to pursue my dream of becoming a full-time artist, creating a unique art style and an enchanting world for everyone to escape to! When Megan isn't creating you can find her walking foreign steps on a trail she's already known, piecing complicated puzzles together, writing poems, baking "healthy" treats, learning, biking, reading, cleaning, finding space with Yoga, daydreaming and spending quality time with her husband, cats, and close family.
